Archaeologists believe that it was invented around 8,000 BC within Asia. The oldest wheel however was found in Mesopotamia and probably hails from the year 3,500 BC and was believed to be created by Sumerians.
It was originally a large wooden cylinder that was used to transport items but eventually became similar to the wheels on a chariot. The second stage was having a sled-like bottom and the third combined the roller (cylinder) and the sled. The wheel is probably the most important invention of all time and without travel would be a lot slower than it is today.
